What’s included in the STCW Proficiency in Designated Security Duties course?
STCW 2010 requires all seafarers to receive basic safety training in accordance with section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code.
The PDSD course is an additional module that can be added to the Basic Safety Training course, for those members of the crew that require it.
Topics include:
- Why ship security is important
- Know the roles and responsibilities of who is involved
- Know what creates a security risk
- Pros and Cons of security methods, equipment, and systems
- Maintaining the measures in a ship security plan and related requirements.
- Maintaining the effectiveness of arrangements, procedures, and equipment at the three security levels
The course can be completed in one day, covering eight hours of tuition.
What is the difference between PSA and PDSD?
Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA) is a requirement for almost every crew member on board a vessel, it is part of the Basic Safety Training program within STCW 10.
Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD) is a requirement for the crew who may have specific security duties while onboard e.g. permitting access to the yacht (letting people onboard). These security duties will be outlined in the Ship’s Security Plan on vessels who are compliant with the ISPS code.
What is the Virtual Interactive PDSD course?
During the current lockdown period, we want to ensure that students are still able to study, this is why we have developed Virtual interactive courses. You’ll learn in real-time with our experienced instructors.
To take part in a virtual interactive course you need to download the Zoom app to your PC/Mac/Tablet (we recommend using these rather than a phone for quality), full instructions on this can be found in the course dates below.
Please note that virtual courses will be recorded, both through video and audio, to verify your participation in the course; these recordings will not be given to third party companies with the exception of the accrediting body for the course if necessary. If you have any objections to this, please inform us immediately.
If you don’t require the full Proficiency in Designated Security Duties course, but do require the Proficiency in Security Awareness course, you can take the half-day option: click here
