You must have completed a STCW Basic Safety Training course within the last five years. Please contact us if the time since your last training course is over five years as extensions have been provided due to the COVID19 world pandemic.
Accreditation
Nautical Academy Europe is accredited by the Republic of the Marshall Islands to provide STCW training courses under the IMO guidelines.
Course Duration
Two consecutive days. See below schedule for timings. The fire training will be held in Barcelona.
What’s included, what's not:
Two full days of training, including equipment. Flights to and from Barcelona for the practical Update for Fire Prevention and Firefighting module are included. Transfers to the swimming pool for the Update for Personal Survival Techniques module are included. Students are responsible for getting to/from Palma airport on the day of the fire training. Information on taxi/bus services is available.
Course Language
This course is taught in English.
COVID-19 Precautions
You must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test (PCR, Antigen etc.) taken within 48 hours of the course start date. Further information on our COVID-19 policy can be found at the bottom of this page, please ensure you read this before booking.

Update for Fire Prevention and Firefighting

Starting from Palma: Meet at Palma airport at 06:00 for an early flight to Barcelona.

Starting from Barcelona: Arrive at the fire ground for a full day of refresher training.

Depending on the student's locations, Day 1 may start in Palma or Barcelona, with Day 2 taking place in the second location.

Schedules will be confirmed once the minimum number of students has been reached.

Update for Personal Survival Techniques

Starting from Palma: Training will begin at 09:00 at the Academy in Palma. The theoretical elements of the Personal Survival Techniques module will be covered before heading to a swimming pool in Palma for practical sea survival training, 'the wet drill'.

Starting from Barcelona: Meet at Barcelona airport at 06:00 for an early flight to Palma, then transfer to the Academy. Approximate return to Barcelona airport 19:30.

WHAT IS THE STCW UPDATE?

1st January 2017: one of the most significant amendments to the STCW convention, the Manila Amendments (STCW 2010) came into force. This was the requirement for all seafarers to update certain elements of the mandatory STCW safety training.

The ‘Update’ includes Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting and Personal Survival Techniques.
Please note that the STCW Elementary First Aid certificate should always be valid and in-date. Please see below.

 

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE STCW UPDATE COURSE?

There are two modules to our STCW Update, or STCW refresher, course, covered over two days:

Module 1: Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting Update

This is a practical training course to maintain the required standard of competence in Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting:

  • Correct use of breathing apparatus for fire fighting and search & rescue operations
  • Utilizing hoses, nozzles, and extinguishers

Module 2: Personal Survival Techniques Update

This is a practical training course to maintain proficiency in the following procedures:

  • Donning of a life jacket
  • Use of an immersion suit
  • Jump from a height into water
  • Swim while wearing a life jacket
  • Keep afloat without a life jacket
  • Turn over an inverted life raft
  • Board a survival craft from the water when wearing a life jacket

 

WHAT IS NEEDED TO DO THE COURSE?

Please ensure you bring copies of your previous STCW Certificates for us to allow the updates.

 

IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING YOUR STCW FIRST AID

Although it is not part of the standard update, we do recommend keeping your First Aid up to date regularly too. Updating your basic STCW does not automatically mean your First Aid is updated. A valid First Aid certificate is also a requirement for students who would like to take a Yachtmaster exam.
