ZOOM Requirements
In order to take part in this virtual course, you must download the 'Zoom Client for Meetings' or 'Zoom Mobile' app to your PC/Mac/Laptop, you can do this directly through the Zoom website (click the link below). Once you have booked the course you will receive full instructions on how to get set up. If you do not have a PC or laptop, you may be required to sign in on two devices (such as phone and tablet) to enable the monitoring of exams during these courses.
Course Description
The STCW Proficiency in Designates Security Duties (PDSD) course is for ship's crew and staff, who have designated security duties onboard. It offers the knowledge and understanding of how to ensure your vessel is secure and safe, whether that be in a port or out at sea.
Pre-requisites
The PDSD course is an additional module that can be added to the STCW Basic Safety Training course.
Course Language
The course and exam will be taught in English.
Certificates
Certificates will be issued digitally when successful completion has been verified, the originals will be available to collect from the school when permitted or postage can be arranged for a small fee.

Course Content:

  • Why ship security is important
  • Know the roles and responsibilities of who is involved
  • Know what creates a security risk
  • Pros and Cons of security methods, equipment and systems
  • Maintaining the measures in a ship security plan and related requirements.
  • Maintaining the effectiveness of arrangements, procedures and equipment at the three security levels

 

We require a minimum of three students to run this course, if we do not reach the minimum number of students the course date may be rescheduled.

To take part in the Zoom virtual classes, you must have equipment that meets the following pre-requisites:

System requirements

  • An internet connection – broadband wired or wireless (3G or 4G/LTE)
  • Speakers and a microphone – built-in or USB plug-in or wireless Bluetooth
  • A webcam or HD webcam – built-in or USB plug-in
  • Or, a HD cam or HD camcorder with video capture card

Supported tablet and mobile devices

  • Surface PRO 2 or higher running Win 8.1 or higher
  • Note: For tablets running Windows 10, they must run Windows 10 Home, Pro, or Enterprise. S Mode is not supported.
  • iOS and Android devices
  • Blackberry devices

For the best results, SOVREN Nautical Academy recommends joining the meeting from a PC or Mac, or a tablet. The screen size of a phone will not be as effective.

Bandwidth requirements

The bandwidth used by Zoom will be optimized for the best experience based on the participants’ network. It will automatically adjust for 3G, WiFi or Wired environments.

Recommended bandwidth for meetings (PC and Mac):

  • For group video calling:
    • 800kbps/1.0Mbps (up/down) for high quality video
    • For gallery view and/or 720p HD video: 1.5Mbps/1.5Mbps (up/down)
    • Receiving 1080p HD video requires 2.5mbps (up/down)
    • Sending 1080p HD video requires 3.0 Mbps (up/down)
  • For screen sharing only (no video thumbnail): 50-75kbps
  • For screen sharing with video thumbnail: 50-150kbps

Recommended bandwidth for meetings (Tablet and mobile devices):

  • For group video calling: 600kbps/1.2Mbps (up/down) for high quality video. For gallery view: 1.5Mbps/1.5Mbps (up/down).
