Course Duration
Three full days of tuition over Zoom, starting around 09:00 and finishing around 18:00.
ZOOM Requirements
In order to take part in this virtual course, you must download the 'Zoom Client for Meetings' or 'Zoom Mobile' app to your PC/Mac/Laptop, you can do this directly through the Zoom website (click the link below). Once you have booked the course you will receive full instructions on how to get set up. If you do not have a PC or laptop, you may be required to sign in on two devices (such as phone and tablet) to enable the monitoring of exams during these courses.
Course Description
The STCW Ship Security Officer certification incorporates both the Security Awareness and Designated Security Duties certification, it is a three day course. This certification is important for those crew in the role of the Ship Security Officer onboard fully understand their duties and responsibilities.
Candidates who wish to take the SSO course should have at least 12 months sea service or at the discretion of the governing body appropriate sea service (minimum 3 months) and knowledge of ships operations to enable them to achieve the objectives of training, ideally candidates will also hold a Designated Security Duties certificate.
Course Language
The course and exam will be taught in English.
Certificates will be issued digitally when successful completion has been verified, the originals will be available to collect from the school when permitted or postage can be arranged for an additional fee.

Day 1

The course will start from 08:45 with ID verification, then the instructor will provide an introduction to Zoom before beginning the course.

Topics covered include: International Codes and Conventions, On-Scene Security Surveys and Weapons & IEDs

Day 2

Students will log in to start at 09:00 and continue with the course.

Topics covered include: Port State Control, Security Levels, Firearms Onboard and Crowd Control

Day 3

The final day will also begin at 09:00, at the end of the day an online test will be completed. Results will be marked and footage reviewed if necessary, before confirmation of whether students have passed or failed.

To take part in the Zoom virtual classes, you must have equipment that meets the following pre-requisites:

System requirements

  • An internet connection – broadband wired or wireless (3G or 4G/LTE)
  • Speakers and a microphone – built-in or USB plug-in or wireless Bluetooth
  • A webcam or HD webcam – built-in or USB plug-in
  • Or, a HD cam or HD camcorder with video capture card

  • Surface PRO 2 or higher running Win 8.1 or higher
  • Note: For tablets running Windows 10, they must run Windows 10 Home, Pro, or Enterprise. S Mode is not supported.

For the best results, SOVREN Nautical Academy recommends joining the meeting from a PC or Mac, or a tablet. The screen size of a phone will not be as effective.

Bandwidth requirements

The bandwidth used by Zoom will be optimized for the best experience based on the participants’ network. It will automatically adjust for 3G, WiFi or Wired environments.

Recommended bandwidth for meetings (PC and Mac):

  • For group video calling:
    • 800kbps/1.0Mbps (up/down) for high quality video
    • For gallery view and/or 720p HD video: 1.5Mbps/1.5Mbps (up/down)
    • Receiving 1080p HD video requires 2.5mbps (up/down)
    • Sending 1080p HD video requires 3.0 Mbps (up/down)
  • For screen sharing only (no video thumbnail): 50-75kbps
  • For screen sharing with video thumbnail: 50-150kbps

Recommended bandwidth for meetings (Tablet and mobile devices):

  • For group video calling: 600kbps/1.2Mbps (up/down) for high quality video. For gallery view: 1.5Mbps/1.5Mbps (up/down).
